Located just slightly west of the Tay road and rail bridges that cross the river to Dundee, the town initially grew as wealthy jute barons of 19th century Dundee sought quieter, cleaner surroundings in which to live during Dundee’s industrial and shipping heyday. Newport-on-Tay was a highly desirable suburb of Dundee after the first Tay Rail Bridge was built in 1878 and the public buildings such as the old ferry terminus and the grand Victorian villas on the hillside reflect these times.
Most homes are traditional stone and Victorian villas built before World War 2. Many of the houses have beautiful views of the Tay river and over into Dundee City across the water. There are also more modern estates towards Wormit. The varied style of housing from stunning little cottages to beautiful terraced and detached houses is therefore both attractive and desirable.
Property prices range from £50,000 for a single bedroom flat to £600,000 for a magnificent detached villa. The average price for a flat is £150,000, for a terraced house is £148,000, for a semi- detached house is £326,000 and for a detached house is £396,000.
Being just a short trip over the bridge to Dundee, Newport on Tay enjoys all of the activities and attractions Dundee has to offer as well as the pleasures of Fife.
